“So proud of our two dancers, Tiffany @tiffyeng “So proud of our two dancers, Tiffany @tiffyeng and Paola @paopaoo_ who are working towards the world Invitational Heiva I San Francisco @heiva.i.sf . Last year our tane Blaise and Gary took first place in their respective categories last year for thier ‘Ori ... and this year we’ve encouraged our vahine to take on the challenge representing not only our studio, but Canada! Back in 1983, I was honored to have been the head judge of this International Tahitian dance competition, one of the few of its kind back then. Prior to covid, of course all activities worldwide were live and in person, but never to keep the Arts and entertainment world down, over the last many years many events moved to online participation including competitions via video submission which puts a whole new twist on the world of entertainment, especially dance. So our sincere thank you’s go out to Nemenzo for creating and presenting this most unique event and opportunity. Please share your well wishes to Paola and Tiffany and our 5 senior dancers Tasha @ka_makani , Gayle @gayle.yamamoto , Paola, Tiffany, Chiharu @chiharu.s_318 who are also competing in the Adult ‘Aparima category ....with a style of old school Tahitian dance medley featuring indigenous dances rarely seen now a days much less taught. We had a fun Workshop today welcoming more and mor We had a fun Workshop today welcoming more and more new students each and every month. 🌺 ‌ Today we were continuing our work on “Ka ulu wehi o ke kai” in honor of Aunty Edith Kanaka’ole and the Kanaka’ole stadium for the Merrie Monarch festival that was this past week and weekend! ‌ To celebrate, we danced hula and ‘talk story’ about Merrie Monarch 2025. What a weekend! Paul’s mother, Colleen Ta’i Ta What a weekend! Paul’s mother, Colleen Ta’i Tavai of TAVAI’S Polynesia, started the very first Polynesian Dance section in Canada at the Surrey Dance Festival @surreydancefest in 1969 that continued until 1981. Paul entered his own brand new Halau in 1975 and entered yearly until the close of the Polynesian section in 1981 ... and THAT was the year that he created “Festival Polynesia!” Then the Surrey Dance Festival opened up an international section of which Paul’s dancers have been participating in along with many other ethnic groups, off and on for many years. This year, we competed 12 numbers - 11 solos and 1 group number! I am so proud of each and every one of my dancers for all their hard work, their dedication to learning and preserving the authenticity of our Polynesian culture, and for doing so well this past weekend at Surrey Dance Festival! many of which obtained personal bests!
